One in two people in the UK will develop cancer at some point in their lives, according to research by Cancer Research UK. There are over 200 different types of cancer.

If you, a family member or friend are currently fighting cancer, we’re here to support you through this difficult time.

Macmillan Cancer Support

Macmillan is a national organisation that supports people through the tough battle with cancer, and makes sure no one goes through it alone.

They can offer you information and support via their helpline or local centres, local volunteers who can offer support and they can help you with any finance issues that may occur due to cancer.

Macmillan has free information leaflets and posters which can be downloaded from their website. To check this out view MacMillan’s website, their website also gives you information on local support groups you can attend.

Treetops Hospice

Treetops hospice is a charity that provides free day care and homecare for people with cancer. Day care is available every week day; homecare operates 7 days a week. Complementary therapies are available including carer and bereavement support.

Cancer Journey Support Group

Cancer journey is a support group for anyone who is or has been affected by cancer, they aim to aid the well-being of those who have had or have cancer. The group exchanges experiences and provides support for each other; they provide information, speakers and therapies at their groups.

When? The first Monday of the month (except bank holidays) at 7pm.

Where? The Village Hotel in Chilwell (NG9 6DL).

Rainbows Children’s Hospice

Rainbows provide hospice care for children and young people ages 0-30 with life limiting and life threatening conditions, and support their families across the East Midlands.

The team at rainbows help to relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and care for children at the end of life and support parents and siblings through bereavement.

Nottingham Cancer Patients and Carers Support Group

This group offers befriending, information and support to anyone affected by any type of cancer. The group allows you to meet others in a similar situation in a friendly, supported environment to share your knowledge, experience and skills.

When? The group meets at 5.30pm on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.

Where? At Nottingham University College Hospital, College of Nursing at the Queens Medical Centre (Derby Road, NG7 2UH).

Teenage Cancer Trust

The Teenage Cancer Trust has a unit at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, designed for 13-18 year olds fighting cancer. There are 3 Teenage Cancer Trust funded staff at the unit including a Lead Nurse, a Youth Support Coordinator and a Complementary Therapist. They work alongside the NHS staff.

They ensure the best quality of care is provided and want to treat the patient firstly as a young person and secondly as a cancer patient. The unit includes a social space with TV, DVD and gaming facilities etc. and has 5 inpatient beds.
